Intellectual Property
As Cyprus has grown as an EU commercial and holding centre, so has the need to protect and commercialise intellectual property here. We help businesses secure, exploit and defend their copyrights, trademarks, patents, designs, know-how and other proprietary assets — both in Cyprus and across the EU.
Registration and protection
We register trademarks, trade names, designs and patents in Cyprus, and register EU trademarks and designs (formerly Community Trademarks) with the EUIPO for protection across the Union. We advise on protecting copyright, designs, inventions, trademarks, know-how and confidential information.
Commercialising IP
Intellectual property is often a company’s most valuable asset. We advise on licensing, assignment, IP holding and group structures, R&D and development agreements, and the IP aspects of corporate transactions and due diligence.
The Cyprus IP Box
Cyprus operates an IP Box regime offering a substantial notional deduction on qualifying profits from qualifying intellectual property, bringing the effective tax rate on such income very low. The regime follows the OECD “nexus” approach. We advise on whether assets and income qualify and how to structure IP ownership accordingly. Read More.
Enforcement and disputes
When infringement cannot be resolved commercially, our litigation experience allows us to act in court and administrative proceedings including: patent infringement; trademark and service-mark infringement; trademark opposition and cancellation; copyright infringement; and unfair competition and deceptive business practices. See our Litigation & Dispute Resolution page.
